Default Low down on fishing line

Last wensday, the wife was cutting grass. So,I when to bring her something to drink. As I was passing my boat,I had notice something not right. After a quick inspection,my starboard motor lower unit had oil leaking out on the ground. Not good.I had went as far as spinning the prop and could tell that there was NO oil left in the lower unit.Well,I pulled the prop and found a ton of fishing line on the shaft which ripped the seals up.Guess I will have to pull the lower unit tomorrow and try to find the tool I will need to remove the inside hub to repair the seals.Glad I found this out before splashing it back in the water or that could of cost me a new lower unit altogether.

Now if I could just find the knucklehead that thru that fishing line over the side of there boat!

Man, that's a lucky find. I've never pulled those seals so I can't help there. Good luck with it.

What a pain but it sure beats having to R&R the lower unit.

Call around to see if I could rent or buy the tool needed to remove the ring.Couldn't find one.Anyway I dropped the lower unit and made my way over to a shop. For $70 they will replace the seals and do a lower unit pressure test. Can't go wrong there, but I just hate to pay for something I could do myself!Merc wanted over $165 for just the tool.

Sounds like a good outcome though. Lots cheaper than a blown lower!

I'm glad I picked up on this post/ thread......I'll have to keep a vigil out on fishing line. Thanks for the eye opener.

$70 was a good deal though.

I've got weed cutters on my props that are made for cutting crab pot lines. You may want to invest in them.
