I've thought about getting one, the Mcguard and from what I have heard, they are good. I wonder though, about how much of a challenge it would be to get off if I ever need to swap out my prop/hub out to sea? I know how tricky it can be with NO prop lock, but imagine it might be trickier with the lock.

I have a Mirage Plus right now and don't have a lock and keep my boat on a saltwater pond that leads out to the ocean but if I were to get a new REV4 or an Enertia, I will get a lock.

I have used the Mcguard lock on both of my boats without any problems. IMO, it is the best thing out there when it comes to prop locks. Maintenance free, corrosion resistant and impossible to break.

As for trickier swapping props out at sea.
Kind of a toss up.

The key for the Mcgard lock has 2 rubber O-rings so it doesn't fall out of your socket/propwrench.
But you can only put the key in 1 way, where a normal nut the socket would go on easier.

BUT, with Mcgard you don't have a cotter pin, it has a locking flat washer.
Getting that little SOB cotter pin out while hanging off that back can be a nightmare.

The easiest I suppose would be Merc props with the "tabs" that you can bend back with your fingers, instead of those cotter pins.

I personally hate cotter pins cause I have to take props on and off all day and end up getting lots of cuts on my knuckles.

Mark,

Did you put your proplocks on yet? I got mine yesterday. I wonder, did you or has anyone else used the black plastic piece that pops onto the end of the lock? My concern is that if I ever needed to change a prop out on the fly, it would be a pain to pry that little cap off. Does it serve any useful purpose other than to make things look good?

BenL,
I am putting mine on this weekend. I will let you know how they work. I haven't decided weather to put the black plastic cap on yet. I have twins so I will probably put the caps on....Mark

I did put my new prop on/Rev4, and what an awesome difference. I have the McGard prop lock on there as well, so far so good. No black cap yet, I'm still debating whether or not to put it on.

I did not use the Mercury Tabbed washer either, just the belleville washer and 50 ft lbs of torque, is this correct?
