Default gelcoat repair advice needed

last week after replacing one of my motors on my lift, the tech dropped the motor on my gunnel and chipped the "fiddle" part of the gunnel. I have gelcoated it to seal it up but am a bit undecided how to fix it like new...I can leave it alone or "build" up the layers with gelcoat but not sure how to "shape" it..any ideas?

how about bringing the work to a boat yard and passing the bill along to the tech who defaced your boat?

they certainly have offered...but I want to use it as a learning experience as I'm good with boat repairs...and many, many, times I take a boat to the "boatyard" for repair, something ELSE always comes back scuffed or marred....I like to keeep the dealer for when I need it - like warranty work...

I've used cellophane overlayed on the gelcoat and a tool to form and smooth. After the gelcoat sets up, I sand it down. If I had any lows spots I simply filled them w/ a little more gelcoat and repeated the process.

Build it up with layers glen, but make sure to scratch the surface pretty good btwn each layer.

Looks like a toungue depressor or popsicle stick would be a good tool to get those radii right.

It would be to deep for layers of gel coat. It will crack. You need to grind off the gel coat in the area to be worked and build it up with a polyester base close to level. Then feather the area and gel coat. If the gel coat is over so many mils it will crack...mark

Way to deep of a cut.You will have to cut it down, build it up with polyester resin and cloth, then cut it down for the gelcoat as stated above. Its not hard, but it will take a little time to do it.
