Default Sales tax on boats??

Guys, I keep getting conflicting stories about what you have to pay as far as sales tax on a used boat. I'm looking to purchase from an individual in SC. From what I've heard, NC charges a 3% sales/use tax or a cap of $1500. However,I've also heard that if you buy from an individual, that it is then considered an "occasional" sale and is not subject to a sales tax. Does anyone have a clue about this? I'm planning on contacting the NC dept of revenue today, but just curious as I'm surprised at the different responses that I've heard. Anyone know an answer to this, let me know. Thx guys....David

Just found this page. Look down to the Purchasesfrom individuals part. I like this if it's true, and I copied it off the NC dept of revenue, so it must be!http://www.dornc.com/taxes/sales/boats_aircraft.pdf#search="boat%20purchase"

I didnt think you would have to pay sales tax since you did not buy the boat from a dealer. I have bought 3 used boats from individuals and never pd sales tax....Mark

Just confirmed... NO sales/use tax if an individual buys from another individual. If you buy from a dealer, sales tax is due. great news for me!!!

No tax??? I wish I could get away with that up here. We pay 6% on everything, new or used. However with that said I have always been able to work with the dealer or individual on the amount of paying tax on

I bought a new jetski in SC and brought it home to NC. The selling dealer never paid the sales tax to NC he collected from me at the time of purchase. NC came after me looking for the $. I faxed them a copy of the bill of sale showing where the dealer charged me for the tax. I would imaging the dealer had to pay them the tax and penalties. NC does not play around on tax.

blue water...why would you pay sales tax to the dealer in another state that you dont live in? I can see paying the tax when you register your jetski....wherever that ends up being. On a related topic, i think you only need to pay sales tax in Florida on the supposed value of the motors if you buy used.

The dealer registered the boat and trailer at the time of purchase with NC so they collected the tax. NC has had issues with this dealer in the past also. I will never shop there again.

Here in Louisiana, one only pays taxes on the trailer of a USED rig.Now if you buy a rig out of state, you pay 4% on everything when you bring it back. There are ways to get around this hold deal.Talk to a few boat brokers that has the know how.
