Default Why not DFI 4 Stroke OB's ?

I have read about Lexus and Cadillac building DFI 4 stroke V-6 engines and wonder why hasn't someone applied it to a 4 Stroke OB yet?

More power and efficiency from the smae size engine. Why not?

Because it would probably cost $100,000 just like a good Lexus or Caddy!!

BMW's new 3 series are direct injected and have been for about a year.....adds both hp , torque and reduces emmisions...I predict it will happen in 4S outboards as we get more stingent EPA standards....

Due to past experience with DI outboards.....I won't own one unless I have to!!! Though I think I would have had better luck except the ones I had were the big block Yamahas....loved to eat power heads.

greg...good to see you here...but DI had nothing to do with any problems you had...when 4S does it, it's just an improvment in timing the spark/fuel/combustion process

Direct Injection does not imply also upping the piston and ring pressures too?

Are they noticeably better performers then TBI or other EFI types in other similar model BMW's?

Wonder if Mercury looked at DFI with the 4's before they went the supercharger route. If DFI on 4s had any huge advantage they would have considered that route too. imho

DFI does not really do much except allow much more precise timing of fuel injection....still need to compress to do what merc deos with verados....I assume all mfr's will do it when they need to...the BMW engine is 6 cyl/300 ft lbs torque/300 hp/3.0 litre/twin turbo and so far in a year has proven...runs a bit hot but compensated by oil cooler.....

Hey there Glen, there are some good familiar faces over here...I'm sure you will agree that Mercury appears to have the bugs out of their DI offerings Back to the response...was the big block Yamaha different than the old OX-66 in other ways besides the fuel delivery DI system?

greg - glad to have you here...wish i knew...it's my impression that in a 2 stroke DI was very important to get emissions right....and 4S will need it later...but I'm no expert...I just just know BMW did it to get the optimum out of the 3 liter motor....
