I posted this report on our local forum, really a sweet day on the water. Don't those seas look just like those of the OBX
Only wound up doing 118 miles for the day and got as far out as 44 miles.
I had some good reports of some solid weed lines 30 miles off so decided to run offshore with my son and good friend Steve yesterday out of Sarasota. We stopped to pick up some live bait and headed out in the range of the D reefs. After about 20 miles we saw some scattered weeds but nothing all that strong. We first trolled the area and got nothing then anchored up close to D6 but the bite really never developed, although we did mark some nice schools below. We decided to run deeper to around 120’ to a few spots that were given to be by a buddy. As we scouted the area a school of Mahi found us and we boated a half-dozen, although the school stayed the bite slowed. We did not see any bottom schools so we ran out to a 42 mile spring and play with some AJ’s. Then planned to scout for some Snapper in the area.
Steve was first to hook-up.
Then it was Matt’s turn and we had a double on. Matt fought the fish for about 15 minutes and then I helped with the last few minutes as he was done! It was a record for him for sure!
To have some fun we decided to do some deep jigging. After loosing 2 jigs to Cudas, Matt hooked up.
Matt was too beat to hold his first deep jig AJ.
We then ran to a nearby spot and picked up some Grouper, Snapper, etc. Nothing of any great size but some keeper fish nonetheless.
Then to our surprise we had a nice visitor who actually swam up to the boat while Matt was tossing the remaining bait before heading in around 4:15. At first he said, “hey look at that Cuda eating all our bait”, then he realized what it was and went crazy! Not having anything really prepared I grabbed a bottom rigged fishing rod, slipped off the weight, put two pieces of squid on the hooks and it was show time! With Matt driving and me on the reel we boated the bonus for the day, a 40lb Wahoo.
Great day on the water that included Mahi, Bonita, Grouper, Snapper, Triggerfish, AJ’s, Shark, and best of all a record for us a 40lb Gulf of Mexico Wahoo.
