Default Guatemala - Casa Vieja Lodge - June report

08 to 10 June: Finds Marty, Martin and Mary Sue Walker aboard the Release from Vero Beach FL. The group did not have the best sailfish bite, but made up for it with a slew of differant species. Young Martin only 10 years old released two sails, caught two wahoo's, an uncountable amount of school size to gaffer size dolphins, and Yellowfin Tunas up to 45 lbs. The young angler checked off a number of species on his very "long" list of fish to catch. Congrats to you Martin, and I know we will be hearing more about your blue water accomplishments in the years to come.

13 June: Finds Jim, Liz, MaryKate, Bridget, and Emily Turner aboard the Release with our very own Casa Vieja Manager Mr. Antonio Valdez on his birthday. The group released 4 sails, and also caught 7 yellowfins up to 45 lbs. The highlight of the day was a 325-lb Blue Marlin caught and released by Antonio. Antonio was overwhelmed to say the least, and when returning to the lodge was greeted by family and friends at the Casa Vieja Lodge to help Antonio celebrate his birthday and marlin release. Congratulations Antonio on your first Blue and Happy Birthday from all your Casa Vieja coworkers!!!

14 June: Finds new friends from the American Embassy in Guatemala City. Alistair Cooke, Joe Leal, John Eustace Jr., and Kristen Alsasser got the opportunity to enjoy a nice sailfish bite in there host country, releasing 10 sails. The group also caught a cooler full of yellowfin tunas up to 50#s. Kristen also accomplished a lifetime dream of being able to swim with an Olive Riddley Turtle. We hope that we will be able to continue to entertain and extend a warm hand of welcome to our friends at the American Embassy.

19 June: Finds Tony & Rick Begando aboard the Release for a little pre tournament practice, and they found it in true Guatemalan fashion. The father & son duo raised 44 sails, had 37 bites, and released 15 sails.

21 to 23 June: Casa Vieja held the annual Father and Son Tournament. The tournament was fished aboard the Finest Kind with captain Chris Sheeder, the Intensity with Capt. Nico Melendez, The Canaso with Capt. Chico Alvaranga, and the Release with Capt. Erik Lorentzen. The sails were here and plenty of bites were had by all the anglers. There were over 150 sails released during the Tournament by 8 teams aboard 4 boats in the three day event.
