April 1st Gulf of Maine Cod Opener
The codfish got lucky yesterday as 30kt winds and 4-6 foot seas greeted anxious fisherman at the docks Tuesday morning. For the few that ventured out it was an exercise in futility as it was hard enough finding the fish never mind getting a jig in front of their noses for more than a few seconds . Even the large headboats either stayed in port or made it a short day as conditions were not good. Even today (4/2) there are Gale Warnings posted along the coast with Storm Warnings on the High Seas.
Water temps on the Bank are still a balmy 39 degrees so until that rises to the mid 40s fishing will be sporadic at best. The good news is that spring is reported to be here and warm weather is on the way (we hope).
I hope to get out this weekend for a look see at some of my early season numbers if this wind will ever stop blowing.
Tight lines,
